Georgetown: Officials of the Carter Center are expected to meet with the Guyana Elections Commission again on Wednesday to gather information relating to the holding of new General and Regional Elections, GECOM Commissioner, Vincent Alexander said.
He noted that at least one opposition-nominated Commissioner, Bibi Shadick, has indicated that she will not attend the meeting.
Alexander said “Commissioner Shadick has indicated that because of no prior consultation with her [regarding the date of the meeting], she will not be available for that meeting.” It is unclear whether the other opposition-nominated commissioners will also opt out of today’s meeting. The engagement is expected to take place at the commission at 14:30hrs.
Through the Carter Center, former United States (US) President, Jimmy Carter, had led the first mission to Guyana with the aim of encouraging sustainable development and developing democratic institutions. This is the second time that the Carter Center will be approaching the commission since the fallout that ensued over the no-confidence motion.
The second visit comes as opposition-nominated Commissioners Sase Gunraj, Bibi Shadick and Robeson Benn have staged several walked-outs at statutory meetings in the middle of critical decisions and motions.
