Georgetown: There have been new calls for General Elections if the opposition does not support the passage of the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism Amendment Bill.
These calls were made by Corriverton residents following a town hall style meeting on the Anti-Money Laundering Bill. Residents also requested that their calls be heeded in the National Assembly.
Addressing the gathering at the Line Path Community Centre, Minister within the Finance Ministry, Juan Edghill stressed the need for the passage of the legislation to prevent foreign investors from pulling out.
He stated that once Guyana is blacklisted by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) it would be unable to access international financing for developmental projects.
The Minister said unemployment and difficulties in receiving remittances are among the hardships that would be imposed on the citizens.
Minister Edghill told citizens that the opposition wants to take Guyana back to the dark days.
