Georgetown Hospital now better equipped to treat burn victims.

Georgetown- The Guyana Burn & Healthcare Charitable Foundation Inc., the key sponsor of the Burn Care Unit, GPHC has donated a Diathermy machine (an instrument used to control bleeding by cauterization in patients with burns) to the hospital. The Diathermy is very important in the treatment of patients with burns and will contribute significantly to the enhancement of the Burn Care Unit, which is very close to achieving a status of excellence. The receipt of this machine is the first step to the operationalization of the burn care theater, adjacent to the Unit.

The hospital has also procured other equipment/instruments required for the smooth functioning of the Unit and these are already in use. Moreover, the Guyana Burn & Healthcare Charitable Foundation Inc. has committed to refurbishing the Unit and works are already apace to have this completed.A contractor will visit the hospital within 24h to carry out repairs to the special doors which were donated by the foundation; training and other infrastructural works have been planned for the duration of the year 2012. Some of the machine’s accessories were also donated to the hospital courtesy of the distributor for Covidien / Valley Lab, USA, through which the machine was sourced.

Patients who sustain burns stand to benefit tremendously from the improvements of this Unit, a proposal which was made by one of the hospital’s Registrars in the Surgical Department; as the hospital continually strives to provide quality health care to all patients.
