Georgetown : Guyana received five million EUROS from the German government for phase 2 of the Guyana Protected Areas System (GPAS).

The first phase of the GPAS project saw Guyana receiving over US $7M during the period 1994 – 2004 through the National Resources Management Project which resulted in the introduction of the Geographic Information Systems at several agencies including the Guyana Forestry Commission, Lands and Surveys Commission and the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission.
Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment, Robert Persaud said’ “this support we are receiving from the German Government amounting to $5M EUROS will allow us to activate and realize the protected areas commission.
Minister Persaud expressed appreciation on behalf of the Government for the support given by the German Government which has resulted in Guyana progressing thus far.
Honorary Consul – Germany/Austria, Ben Ter Welle noted that Germany has decided to further extend its relationship with Guyana because the general policies of the two countries show an overlap with regards to renewable energy, climate change, protecting biodiversity, and the LCDS.
He added that in the past Guyana as a partner with Germany has been very reliable and predictable with the people of Guyana and implementation agencies always adhering to what was agreed particularly since that is not always the case in development relationships.
