Georgetown : Cabinet Secretary Dr. Roger Luncheon claims that Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) now has an expanded role and it is necessary to move into a much bigger facility at High Street, Werk-en Rust.
“The decision was made some time ago at the Cabinet level,” Dr Luncheon said. He added that the issue became more complex with the creation of the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment (NRE), which is currently housed at the Office of the President.
The broadening role of the GGMC and its need to monitor environmental issues, resulted in a lack of space, hence the need to find another alternative to adequately house the various sections of the agency, the Cabinet Secretary noted.
He said that further clarity on the proposed move, which will result in the NRE moving from its present location to the Kingston offices of the GGMC, will be provided in the near future by Minister Robert Persaud.
A recent report in the Kaieteur News newspaper had cited a number of “sources” as saying that they were dissatisfied with the proposed move into the building which stands on the site of the former Broadcasting House, High Street, Georgetown.
