Madhia – The Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) have introduced aquaculture in the mined out areas in Mahdia, where it is also involved in a re-vegetation project.
According to the Government Information Agency, GGMC Environmental Officer (forestry), Kim Goodchild pointed out that the site was established in 2009 as part of a reclamation effort by the commission and efforts were focused on setting up a model to demonstrate to miners that such an activity was possible once the right species were used.
GGMC’s current model took into consideration three species used in the reclamation process. These include farming of citrus and cassava, planting of the acacia mangium and aquaculture.
The presence of old mining pits provided the opportunity for the promotion of fish rearing.
Goodchild indicated that over 2000 fresh water pacu fingerlings, which were donated by New Line Aqua Farm in Region Three, were released into two ponds. She pointed out that that particular fish is a very hardy species which makes it easier for it to be reared in environmentally harsh conditions.
The availability of the reclamation site in Mahdia gives students from the Mahdia Secondary school the opportunity to conduct practical exercises particularly those pursuing Agricultural Science at the CXC level.
