Georgetown : The National Frequency Management Unit (NFMU) held a symposium and mini job fair at the Guyana International Conference Center (GICC), Liliendaal in observance of Girls in ICT day, yesterday, aimed at empowering and encouraging girls and young women to consider careers in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
The event which was held under the theme ‘Expanding Boundaries, Changing Attitudes’, saw about 300 females participating from the Carnegie School of Economics, the Government Technical Institute (GTI) and several secondary schools.
Prime Minister Samuel Hinds encouraged the students to pursue a career in ICT because in today’s world, and especially in Guyana no field is limited to females.
“We don’t have here in Guyana the constraint like many places for persons to advance….the doors have always been open for girls to advance,” Prime Minister Hinds said. He noted that though Government has been making the facilities available, women have not been engaging in those areas that are technical as they ought to.
The One Laptop Per family (OLPF) and several private sector companies including, Digicel, Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GT&T) and Global Technology showcased their ICT products and services and their representatives spoke of job opportunities at their agencies.
