Georgetown: Businessman and Publisher of the Kaieteur News Glenn Lall and his wife Bhena Lall were released on their own reconnaissance after being charged with intend to defraud the Guyana Revenue Authority.
The duo appeared before the Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry on Monday. Their next court appearance will be on October, 24, 2014.
The Kaieteur News Publisher, several staff and supporters walked briskly back to their Saffon Street offices.
Glenn Lall is convinced that the charges are as a result of his newspapers regular exposure of alleged corrupt activities involving the Government of Guyana and the Guyana Revenue Authority. He has declared that with help from the GRA, the Government of Guyana and some of its closest supporters have started an attempt to destroy his media entity.
Also implicated are two friends of the Lalls, Narootandeo and Gharbassi Brijnanans facing related charges. The charges are based on an alleged investigation by the GRA into duty free concessions under the re-migrant scheme.
According to the summonses, the Lalls of Lindley Avenue, Nandy Park, East Bank Demerara are jointly accused of two counts of having `knowingly dealt with goods, with intent to defraud the revenue of duties’. The Lalls have also been jointly accused along with Narootandeo Brijnanan and his wife Gharbassi with two counts of being `knowingly concerned in the fraudulent evasion of import duties of Customs’. The Brijnanans address was listed as No. 61 Village, Corentyne, Berbice. All the charges relate to the importation of two Lexus LX 570 vehicles by the Brijnanans. The vehicles have been lying in the GRA Customs bond after being seized several weeks ago.
