Goldsmith robbed at Hydronie Market

East Bank Essequibo: Abdul Khan, goldsmith and businessman, was, on Sunday, attacked and robbed by two men on a motor cycle, one of whom was armed with a firearm, at Hydronie market, East Bank Essequibo at about 14:55hrs.

The robbers held up the 36-year-old goldsmith, of Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara, when he was about to enter his motor vehicle after selling at the market. They took away a bag with gold and silver jewellery valued at $4.7 million, along with a gold weighing scale and goldsmith tools and escaped.

Based on information received the police arrested two men who were waiting in motor car PHH 8006 which was parked in a bushy area at Orangestein, East Bank Essequibo, where the motor cycle, CD 5115, which was used in the robbery, was also found hidden among some bushes.

Subsequent police investigations and surveillance led to the arrest of the two robbers, on Monday, in a house at East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, and a quantity of gold jewellery was recovered.

The men are all in police custody as the investigations continue.
