Government aims to have a professionalized Public Service- Minister Harmon

IMG_0992Georgetown: Minister of State Joseph Harmon, during his 2015 Budget presentation, pointed out that “A fresh approach was needed, in which the Guyanese people are at the center.” He noted that the APNU+AFC Government is committed to bringing this change to the lives of the people.

Addressing the efforts to professionalise the public service, Minister Harmon said major emphasis will be placed on capacity building for Public Servants.

“As Minister with responsibility for public service, ensuring that we have a public service that is not corrupt, that does not take bribes…this is how you take a nation forward,” he said.

To reiterate the point, Harmon said, “We want to have a strong public service. We understand that public service is not service to yourself, but service to the public, and the public is the master, so when we took office, we recognised that we have to make the public service strong, we have to restructure it, so that it reflects the nation’s vision, one that is disciplined. The Public Service is now undergoing change,” he said.

He explained that, “this means we would have to bring in fresh people and train them and they would have to start at the bottom, and they would be pushed upwards. The plan is to have a six month training period at, what we call a Public Service Staff College.”
