Government moves closer to breaking GT&T’s monopoly.

Georgetown: As was predicted and publicised the main opposition PNC/R and others were absent from yesterday's sitting of the national assembly. Yesterday's session was expected to be a debate on the two Telecoms legislation which without any opposition was sent to a Special Select Committee for consideration. The bills if enacted into law will break the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph's monopoly over landline and international call services. This will open the market to competition in the industry of which Digicel has already taken a big chunk of the cellular market. GT&T will now be challenged to offer more innovative, cost effective and additional services in the industry to compete with other providers in the local market.
