Georgetown : Government has approved approximately $30M which will go towards financial support for Central Government and Regional entities for Mashramani 2012 activities which is being celebrated under the theme, “Mashing With Pride Keeping We Tradition Alive”.
Cabinet Secretary Dr. Roger Luncheon today said that the lead up to the event has seen increasing participation of private sector entities, by the days.
“Popular imagination, Cabinet contended is rife and this is about the likely intrigue of Opposition political interest in the activities,” Dr. Luncheon said.
Guyanese from the Diaspora will also benefit, from increased flights from North America, a decision which was approved by Cabinet. This will run from January to May 2012.
“The licencing approval by Cabinet however, was not straight forward, as a fairly lengthy discourse on the issue and its impact on competition was discussed,” he added.
Among the competitions and activities scheduled for Mash are: Chutney and Soca competitions; Children’s Poetry, Dance and Costume competitions, Children’s Parade; Masquerade band, Inaugural Republic of Guyana lecture, decorated building and calypso competitions. The most anticipated event is the February 23rd float parade.
Guyana gained Republic status on February 23, 1970 and Mashramani is a celebration of the event.
