Government surprise of misinformation about GOG/World Bank loan for UG

Georgetown : Cabinet Secretary Dr. Roger Luncheon   said Government remains concerned about the falsities being peddled around, with regards to the role the University of Guyana plays, in the design of the Government of Guyana, World Bank loan agreement.

Dr. Luncheon speaking at his weekly media briefing claimed several members of the Opposition have used the opportunity to discredit the Government, due to their ill-advised pronouncements which stated that the Finance Minister’s action’s stalled the institution from accessing the loan.
Luncheon explained that Former President Bharrat Jagdeo, during deliberations with heads at the World Bank, was successful in ensuring that the allocation will be used to address the education environment nexus at UG.
Commitments were also agreed upon for loans to be provided to the institution, to support several developmental projects, including the bio-diversity centre at UG, and not the inaccuracies that are being peddled in sections of the media.
“The World Bank loan financing was a logical extension of that initiative and Cabinet did recall that this was exclusively, a decision that originated and was implemented by the Government. These inaccuracies which are being blasted around are indeed reprehensible in the face of the availability of information to the contrary,” he said.

On February 25, the University of Guyana Senior Staff Association (UGSSA) and its Workers’ Union (UGWU) signed an agreement bringing to an end a three-day planned strike action.
