Port-of-Spain: The Government has initiated a review of the conditions that govern judges after their retirement, as a constitutional requirement that debars them from re-entering private practise within 10 years has put some of them under financial pressure.
Attorney General Anand Ramlogan made the announcement at the post-Cabinet media conference today.
While judges may enjoy lucrative packages during their employment many of them have been finding it hard to continue their lifestyles after retirement.
The AG says the government is now seeking to have a review of this because it debars persons from serving as judges.
AG Ramlogan acknowledges that the law was so crafted to prevent any form of compromise or even corruption but he says this must be assessed.
Judges he says would also be given other special benefits to ensure that they do not lose out after retirement.
This includes diplomatic passports and bus-route passes.
The AS also announced that the Chief Justice will head a team to the United States to look at technology used in some courts with a view to having them implemented here.
