Public hospital officials admit to shortage of beds

Georgetown : Management of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation are admiting that there is a shortage of beds at the hospital.

They were responding to an article published in today’s edition of the Kaieteur Newspaper captioned, ‘Patients forced to share bed in GPHC’.

In a release today the hospital management pleads for understanding from the public saying the GPHC is the only national referral hospital in the country which saw 4,263 referrals from hospitals in all the regions in 2010.

The hospital management says the institution cannot and will not refuse to admit a patient even if there isn't a bed.

"Unfortunately, this discomfort will continue to be faced until the new inpatient facility is complete, which in the first phase will accommodate 214 patients with each to a bed. The sharing of a bed is not a choice, but a reality which must be faced."

  1. And when exactly would these beds be available??? Patients who cannot be accommodated should be placed in private hospitals at the governments cost
