Georgetown: Even as Guyana has breached the saturation point for available bandwidth with the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company’s installation of a US$ multi-million fibre optic cable coupled with the fact that the Government is also installing another fibre optic cable from Brazil, the Guyana Power and Light is installing its own fibre optic cable.
This was confirmed by the Chief Executive Officer of the power company, Bharrat Dindyal, who said that while not much information can be disseminated publicly about the project, it is from a part of the US$42M ($8.4B) electricity system upgrade.
That project is being undertaken by the China National Machinery Import and Export Corporation (CMC).
Despite the power company’s numerous pronouncements on the US$40M upgrade for the electricity, the top brass for the power company has never before divulged specific details on fibre optic cable being installed.
Dindyal told this publication that the fibre optic cable will provide a range of services for the Power Company in the modernization effort and will range from data collection to the installation of CCTV systems.
The fibre optic cable will be linking the sub-stations and a sophisticated SCADA (Supervisory, Control and Data Acquisition) system to facilitate the monitoring, control and protection of the entire system, will be integrated.
When asked why the power company did not seek to lease or rent bandwidth from the Guyana Telephone and Telephone Company given that it already has an installed capacity far greater than the foreseeable demands for the Country, Dindyal said that utility companies would usually install such capacities independently.
He did reiterate that given the nature of how the cable will be used some of the information as it relates to the project will have to be kept confidential.
This publication was informed that the cable will be incorporated along the power cables that the Chinese contractor is installing.
