Georgetown : The Guyana Power and Light (GPL) Incorporated currently has over 1000 cases of electricity theft and tampering pending in courts against customers. Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Bharrat Dindyal said that the level of losses has been reduced to 31 percent; however, recently it has been slowly climbing upwards.
“This means that we will be going into communities, talking to residents…basically taking a softer approach rather than continuing to rely entirely in the old policing methods. We are advised by the experts, that the old method would not be successful because it basically results in antagonism, and deteriorates the company’s relationship with communities,” the CEO explained.
Earlier this year, Dindyal had stated that the company was losing about $2Billion annually to electricity theft.
However, the company plans to continue with raids into areas where residents continue to steal electricity despite the dangers; but at the same time, it is also looking at designing a network in peripheral areas in such a way, so as to make the wholesale theft of electricity becomes much more difficult.
