Georgetown: “Brutal and vengeful” were the adjectives used by A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Presidential Candidate, David Granger, when he described the action by the Police ranks that shot protestors yesterday who staged protest action in the city of Georgetown.
Commenting on a meeting that he had with Henry Greene, the Commissioner of Police, Granger said that he stands by his assertion that the police used excessive force. The Former Army General says that in all police operations there should be the use of minimum force when dealing with any sort of gathering adding that “it was not a hostile gathering…we are not in a state of war; we are not under a state of emergency and so the force was excessive.” Granger insisted too that the police are required by law, their training and their manuals to apply minimum force adding that “what we saw yesterday was not minimum force…That is the point I made to the commissioner.”
He emphasized that it is now not a matter of a technicality on whether permission was issued for the march or not but rather “the march did not threaten anyone; none was hurt, no property was damaged, no attacks were made against the police.”
He reported that the Commissioner of Police on the other hand insisted that the March was not legal and that they (police ranks) will use any means at their disposal to suppress illegal marches. But according to the former Army Chief he is in no way satisfied with the response by the Top Cop in relation to the shooting of the protestors. “We are normal citizens conducting a normal protest and we insist that excessive force was used and it must not be allowed to happen…people all over the world are entitled to protest,” he passionately asserted.
