Pakaraima : A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Presidential Candidate Brigadier David Granger visited five villages in the mountainous Potaro-Siparuni Region. Meeting residents of Kato, Paramakatoi, Monkey Mountain, Itabac and Kurukubaru (said to be the highest settlement in Guyana at 850 m above sea level), Mr. Granger promised that an A.P.N.U administration would guarantee their land rights, improve infrastructure, transform agriculture, lower the cost-of-living and provide jobs for young people.
Mr. Granger, accompanied by former Members of the National Assembly, Dr. George Norton and Mrs. Gloria Bancroft, emphasised the importance of reforming the education system and retaining trained and qualified teachers to improve education standards especially in the difficult Pakaraimas’ landscape. Mr. Granger noted that the Patamona population was increasing rapidly but so were poverty and unemployment.
Residents in all the villages expressed concern about poor communications and costly transportation. Mr. Granger lamented the fact that the Region’s riches did not benefit its people. The Potaro-Siparuni – Guyana’s fifth largest and one that is bigger than Costa Rica in Central America – is the country’s largest producer of gold and diamonds and a major producer of timber.

Its great to know that Mr.Granger visited my people at Paramakatoi and made a wonderful promise of job opportunities for young people, proper infrastructure, etc. Thanks Mr.Granger. I am however disappointed with one of your team members Miss Gloria Bancroft. She appears only at the Elections season and disappears when the people are in need of her representation. Miss Bancroft,I hope that you wouldn’t repeat that mistake.
