Grenada’s marine project being assisted by Korea

St. George’s, Grenada: The Republic of Korea is assisting Grenada in a research project that is aimed at supporting the development of a national policy for the integrated management of the coastal and marine zones of the island, according to a CMC report.

A government statement said that marine specialists from the Republic of Korea have arrived here to begin work on the US$500,000 marine research project on the island’s south east coast.

Last December, the two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) relating to the project that the government statement said is also aimed at enhancing relations between them, the CMC report said.

It said that the scope of work include coastal marine investigations with reference to coastal elevation, water quality and physical oceanography; procurement of equipment and materials which is being provided by the Republic of Korea; dispatch of Korean experts to Grenada; and training of Grenadian experts in Korea, the CMC reported.

“This project complements the international trade show Expo Yeosu 2012 in Korea in which a team from Grenada will participate,” the statement said, noting that the exposition will highlight the importance of biodiversity, marine resources and sustainable activities in coastal areas.
