Georgetown: The Guyana Police Force is still processing the grenades and AK-47 ammunition which were discovered on Saturday.
Commander Clifton Hicken said it appeared that the grenades and ammunition were in the canal for a while now.
“We are still processing the discovery and it seems it has been there for a long time,” he said.
Sixteen grenades, several rounds of AK-47 ammunition, 13 grenade fuses and seven rounds of .9mm ammunition, along with a gun cleaning kit, were on Saturday afternoon discovered partially submerged in the Lamaha Canal in the vicinity of the Botanical Gardens. The discovery was made by a Constable attached to the Mayor and City Council Constabulary unit about 14:40h.
According to information received, the Constable reportedly was in the area and observed a green box partially submerged in the water at the edge of the canal and out of curiosity, he pulled it from the water.
On account of the weight of the box, the Constable reportedly prised it open and upon doing so, he discovered the objects.
He immediately contacted the Police and informed them of the find. Ballistics experts arrived at the scene and took possession of the box and its contents but not before examining them.
From all indications, while the grenades are in working condition, the pins/fuses were detached.
