Grey areas in prison legislations

Bridgetown.

The Superintendent of Prisons, Colonel John Nurse, says the legislation governing the Barbados Prison Service (BPS) and the operations at Her Majesty's Prison Dodds, should be amended to better assist the staff of the BPS in carrying out their duties of rehabilitating offenders.

Nurse said the BPS has a number of areas that need to be strengthening and updating given the changing nature of criminal activity.

He added  that there are a number of grey areas in in the legislation related to staff and inmates that must be clarified. Referring to relationships between staff and inmates, Nurse said that efforts are underway to develop and  distribute a code of ethics and professional conduct which will give prison staff better guidance in this regard.

"Some of the systems governing the BPS  were introduced in 1974 are perhap not relevant now and we need to change it to allow us to properly execute our work", said Nurse.
