Georgetown: Passengers arriving at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) were given a preview of Emancipation celebrations recently, as Guyana commemorated the 179th anniversary of emancipation of Africans.
This annual Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) activity caught many by surprise and brought true Guyanese welcome to the visitors with samples of traditional African delicacies as they made their way to the arrival terminal.
As to the significance of this activity, GTA’s Director Indranauth Haralsingh explained that the meet and greet exercise is now in its 8th year and is still successful in highlighting the aspects of the various cultures, traditions and historic events of Guyanese.
He emphasized the need for all Guyanese to embrace each other’s culture and to recognize that it is only in unity that all can benefit from the country’s present growth and development.
“The Ministry of Tourism and the Guyana Tourism Authority would like to welcome all the passengers arriving in Guyana, whether it is Guyanese or tourists coming here to spend time with their families and friends especially for Emancipation celebrations,” Haralsingh said.
A few of the arriving passengers expressed thanks to the GTA in having such a warm Emancipation welcome in true Guyanese style.
