As Guyana’s flag was hoisted in the City of East Orange, New Jersey commemorating Guyana’s 47th Independence Anniversary for the 6th year. Guyana American Heritage Foundation, Inc. showcased diverse Guyanese talents from Guyana and from within its home state of New Jersey. Guyanese Designer Ms. Sonia Noel was described in high esteem with Ralph Lauren and Ellen Tracy as the fashionista from Guyana who showcased astute designs from her collection and Soca Monarch Mr. Jumo Primo was honored with a plaque as a cultural ambassador around the world from Guyana as he sang a rendition from his album.
Guyana American Heritage Foundation was founded by Ms. Allison Butters-Grant and Ms. Ira Lewis who contributes both at home and abroad in being Ambassadors for Guyanese in their daily lives. The event was hosted on On May 31st 2013.
Honorable Mayor Robert L. Bowser said he was honored that the nations celebrated their Independence in the City of East Orange. He noted that Guyanese were a big part of the community which is described by politicians as a melting pot. Bowser described the expatriates as enthusiastic people who share their culture with others in East Orange. “This is what we want in our city,” said Mayor Bowser, who called on Guyanese to continue to make a contribution to his municipality, adding, “This ceremony is very important to our city.”
The mayor then memorialized Guyana’s Independence with a Proclamation which was handed over by the Mayors’ Aide Mr. Troy Webster to Mr. Bayney Karran, Guyana’s Ambassador to Washington who was representing His Excellency Donald Ramotar, President of Guyana.
Ambassador Karran, in turn congratulated members of the Guyana American Heritage Foundation, Inc. for this fitting tribute, and recalled when Guyana obtained Independence on May 26, 1966, there was joyousness and celebration throughout the land, as was witnessed during the cultural presentation of City Hall plaza. In reading a statement from His Excellency Donald Ramotar, President of the Republic of Guyana, Karran extended best wishes to Guyanese people and an invitation to nationals to visit their homeland to see the economic and social transformation that has taken place. He also congratulated the City of East Orange on its 150th anniversary, on behalf of President Ramotar.
The Executive Secretary who gave the welcome address, Ms. Allison Butters-Grant challenged the attendees to visit Guyana and collectively adopt each of their hometowns with supporting tangible projects with their learned education and experience towards the expanded development of Guyana.
