Georgetown : The Government of Guyana has committed to collaborating with the Government of Haiti on exploring the possibility of implementing an electronic food safety and food traceability system.
The Haitian Government had submitted a project proposal to facilitate the electronic traceability system at the recently concluded 24th Inter-Sessional Meeting of CARICOM Heads of Government, held in Haiti on February 18 and 19.
In simple terms, food traceability refers to record-keeping systems that provide the ability to identify the path and the history of an animal, food product, or food ingredient through the food supply chain. Implementing such a system in the region would significantly improve the capacity of Member States to cope with the challenges posed by the international export market, as well as the value chain.
The meeting welcomed the project submitted by the Republic of Haiti to facilitate the electronic traceability system, and requested additional information on the project. Given the importance of the matter, the two countries undertook to have bi-lateral discussions.
In addition, ttraceability systems improve management on the supply side by increasing efficiency of process monitoring and assurance. Deficiencies in production, processing, storage or distribution stages can be readily identified and addressed through product tracing, resulting in decreased cost, product and economic loss.
