Georgetown : Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment Robert Persaud on a recent visited to Suriname met with his counterpart Minister Jim Hok and discussed the deepening and strengthening of cooperation in the mining sector between the two countries.
The meeting follows a mandate given by the President of Suriname, Mr. Desire Bouterse and Guyana’s President Mr. Donald Ramotar.
According to the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Ministers had dialogue on sustainable exploitation and development of natural resources and how the two countries could cooperate in those two areas.
The ministry stated that, “Minister Hok and Minister Persaud agreed that there was mutual interest for Suriname and Guyana to work more closely together in the natural resources area and noted that there is a large potential for cooperation, ranging from knowledge and information sharing to joint educational and training programmes for the small scale mining industry of the two countries and in the development of the oil and gas exploration and exploitation sectors”.
Minerals sourced from small-scale mining operations for the illicit trade in minerals was also addressed by the Ministers. They concurred that mining sector experts from both countries should meet at the earliest to address the areas of mutual interest. “In that context, they mandated that the experts would prepare an executable plan for cooperation in the natural resources sector for the mutual benefit of both Guyana and Suriname,” the Ministry stated.
