Georgetown: The Guyana Book Foundation in observance of Education Month 2015 has donated over 4,700 children’s reading books and teaching resources to 46 “High Needs” Nursery, Primary and Secondary schools in Region 4, Georgetown. 16 Nursery, 15 Primary and 15 Secondary schools were recipients of donated books from the Foundation which were mainly distributed by the Department of Education, Region 4.
As part of its Education Month’s Project, the Foundation will also be donating 131 books in total to St Ignatius Secondary in Region 9, the Leonora and Mahaicony Technical and Vocational Centres, the Nursing School of Georgetown and Texila University.
Since 2012 the Foundation has also sought to partner with corporate entities for its donation programme during the month of September. Once again Scotia Bank, Republic Bank Guyana Limited and Massy Guyana Limited partnered with the Foundation along with the National Milling Company coming on board this year and together sponsoring eight of these schools. These books were presented on separate occasions to the recipients with Scotia Bank presenting their books to the Albouystown and Agricola nursery schools on 15th September 2015.
The remaining books were handed over to Mr Clifton David, Deputy Chief Education Officer (Secondary) from the Department of Education on Thursday September 17th, 2015 for distribution. The presentation was held at the Guyana Book Foundation’s office located at 56 New Garden and Anira Streets in Queenstown, Georgetown.
The Foundation’s main mission over the years has been to improve children’s literacy and this year’s donation is in keeping with that commitment. GBF’s donation will ensure that children have access to high quality and interesting books, which will encourage them to read outside of their required text books, while at the same time helping to build libraries in schools.
It is our hope that by the donation of books to these schools and Tertiary Institutions, we will be helping to make a difference in the lives of children and young adults – a life where every child or person can pursue his/her education and realize their full potential.
