Guyana confirms eight COVID-19 cases

Georgetown: The health authorities in Guyana on Saturday confirmed that three additional persons were tested positive for the COVID-19 bringing the confirmed cases to eight as they have been placed in isolation at a health facility.

COVID-19 was identified in Wuhan, China late last year and the World Health Organization declared it a global pandemic last week.

Former Minister of Health Volda Lawrence said the number of death remains at one.  The Minister noted that there are now 44 persons who have been tested for the disease. Lawrence said the number of persons in institutional quarantine remains at 31 while the number of persons quarantined at home has decreased.

Minister Lawrence said there are now facilities in each of the ten administrative regions in Guyana to cater for persons who may be in need of institutional quarantine.

Those facilities can cater to 134 persons in addition to the four facilities in Regions Three and Four which cater for 350 persons.

The PAHO/WHO recently donated 1,100 test kits to the Ministry.

President David Granger, through the publication of an extraordinary gazette, has since issued sweeping orders he said is intended to contain the spread of the new coronavirus.
