Guyana COVID -19 cases stands at 33 with five death

Georgetown: Former Minister of Public Health Volda Lawrence on Tuesday afternoon confirmed that the COVID-19 cases has reached a total to 33 cases thus far.

Dead: Drag Race champ, Deryck ‘Mad Dog’ Jaisingh

The number of deaths remain at five with the last being Drag racer Deryck ‘Mad Dog’ Jaisingh who succumbed on Monday evening.

The Minister said 132 persons have been tested and there are currently 38 persons in quarantine at a Ministry of Health facility. Those account for two persons in Region Two, ten in Region Three, 22 in Region Four, three in Region Six and one in Region Eight.

She said there are currently 24 persons in isolation with four in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Of the four persons, one is in a critical condition.

The Regional breakdown for persons isolated are one in Region One, four in Region Three, seventeen in Region Four, one in Region Five and one in Region Seven.

The last death was 38-year-old popular drag racer called ‘Mad Dog’. He passed away in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).

The businessman of Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara vested the GPHC last Tuesday after being refused by a private hospital. He had been experiencing breathing problems.

He was reportedly admitted the same day, and tested, but the family members did not know until Thursday that he was positive with the coronavirus. He got progressively worse and died.

The Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC) in a Facebook post said it is deeply saddened at the news of the passing of Jaisingh.

“The club and the entire motor racing fraternity join his family and friends in the mourning of his passing which has rocked the sport. He was the reigning unlimited class drag racing champion with his Toyota Supra. He will be missed by members of the racing fraternity and race fans all around.”

Jaisingh, the club said, was described by those who know him as a good and kind-hearted individual.

“The GMR&SC wishes that his family will get the strength to get through this tough situation.” Jaisingh was one of eight individuals who were transferred to the hospital’s ICU.
