Georgetown: The Guyana Defence Force commissioned its sergeants academy building, at camp Stephenson Timehri.
Addressing the commissioning ceremony on Tuesday chief of staff commodore Gary Best pointed out that with this programme the force has now completed the necessary levels of leadership training.
The chief of Staff also pointed to what the building means for the force for the students to have their own space.
The leader sergeants course-01, is the first of its kind in the English-speaking Caribbean.
The programme which is the brainchild of commodore Best is aimed at creating a professional cadre of senior non-commissioned ranks, so as to enhance the operations of the force.
Participants for the one year training exercise which commenced on October, 29 2012 were drawn from Camp Ayangana, Base Stevenson, Base Camp Cama and Base Camp Ituni. The Aspirants were required to poses three CXC subjects.
The objective of the course was to allow students to effectively perform the duties of a Sergeant in the GDF, administer and lead soldiers in the absence of the officer with the principles of leadership, loyalty, discipline and competence.
