Georgetown : Local artistes who have become renowned both locally and overseas will be performing at the “Night of Legends” at the inaugural Guyana Festival, on August 8 to 10 at the Guyana National Stadium.
The Guyana Festival which will see a mixture of the country’s traditional music, dance, food, art and craft being exhibited, will be marketed in North America and the Caribbean, aimed at bringing awareness of Guyana’s diverse cultural heritage, and generally the nature of its tourism product locally, regionally and internationally.
Among those lined up to perform at the Night of Legends which will be held on August 9 include Dave Martins, Sammy Baksh, Terry Gajraj Yoruba Singers, Mighty Rebel, Sash Persaud, Cecilia Samaroo, Teddy Jones, Johnny Braff, Glenn Miller, Hilton Hemerding, Winston Caesar and Aubrey Mann.
Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce (ag) Irfaan Ali expressed gratitude to the artistes for coming onboard with the concept of the Guyana Festival.
“It will be a celebration as never before, it would be a moment of sharing of sound through our music, the taste through our food and soul through our culture and history”. Minister Ali said as he regards the event as one that will showcase the togetherness of Guyanese.
Minister Ali reiterated that the festival is receiving tremendous support both locally and internationally, and is at present being marketed in the Caribbean, New York, Miami, and Toronto and even in London.
He announced that there will be a special booth set up, giving persons the opportunity to meet and interact with the local celebrities.
He also highlighted that several high ranking players have confirmed their participation in the Guyana Festival cricket match, between Master’s Team and President’s XI. Cricketers such as Derek Kallicharran, former first class cricketer and his brother Alvin Kallicharran former West Indian batsman, Faoud Bacchus, Mahendra Nagamootoo, Travis Dowlin, Neil McGarrell, Clive Butts and West Indies cricket player, Clayton Lambert are in the lineup.
Minister Ali also announced that a special package will be announced with Fly Jamaica for Jamaicans who wish to attend the festival. Further, the ministry will be engaging other airlines to offer similar packages.
On Friday, August 8, there will be the opening ceremony which will see a fusion of Guyanese cultures comprising various dramatic performances highlighting drama groups, and craft, poetry, dance and painting.
The event will culminate with a cook-off competition of traditional Guyanese cuisine, such as duck curry, pepperpot, cook-up, metemgee and black cake, followed by a grand concert aimed at promoting the next generation of Guyana’s music industry and help to develop new/young talent. Performing will be Jumo “Rubber Waist” Primo, Adrian Dutchin, Melissa “Vanilla” Roberts and others.
