Georgetown: Guyana participated in the largest oil and gas sector trade show in the world – Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) 2019 which kicked off on May 6, in Houston, Texas. The team arrived in Houston on Sunday.
The event is being hosted under the theme “OTC’s Golden Anniversary Opening Session: The Next 50 Years of Offshore Developments”. It will provide industry executives with the opportunity to explore how companies are preparing for digitalisation, automation, machine learning, and finding out what is their vision for the future of offshore exploration & production (E&P) operations.
The Government of Guyana through GO-Invest is collaborating with the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) to facilitate the participation of representatives from approximately 24 private sector companies and several state agencies. The Guyanese contingent represents the largest the country has ever sent to an international oil and gas trade show.
According to OilNOW, at a recently held press conference, President of GCCI, Nicholas Boyer said participation at OTC is necessary for local content development which allows for Guyanese businesses to learn and seek partners in pursuit of emerging opportunities in the South American country. GCCI represents more than 240 companies in Guyana and has been advocating for local content development, with emphasis on oil and gas, over the past two years.
“Participating at OTC will help us to bring more of the Supply Chain on to Guyana’s shores,” he stated.
Remarking on the scale of the OTC event, Boyer noted that, “It was very important that Guyana has representation at this conference, and as such in January, I reached out to the CEO of GO-Invest and the Ministry of business to pursue a partnership so that we can ensure there is an adequate representation.”
“One of the key things we are aiming for in this mission is first education, secondly connection and networking. The underpinning of these two is to promote local content,” he said
The OTC’s flagship conference is held annually at NRG Park in Houston. The event is sponsored by 13 industry organisations and societies, who work cooperatively to develop a technical program for energy professionals to meet to exchange ideas and opinions on advanced scientific and technical knowledge for offshore resources and environmental matters.
It was noted that “A Guyana Evening of Information Sharing and Networking,” supported by ExxonMobil Guyana, is scheduled to be held on Wednesday, May 8. Presentations will be made by GO-Invest, the Department of Energy, Guyana Geology and Mines Commission and GCCI.
“The Guyana Evening is an unpaid invitation-only event sponsored by ExxonMobil Guyana as part of their local content development initiatives. Approximately 500 representatives from various international and local companies will be in attendance to meet with the Guyanese Delegation,” the online article quoted CEO of the Guyana Office for Investment, Owen Verwey as saying.
The event will see participants from both the Public and Private Sector using the opportunity to network and develop relationships with key persons within the industry to attract investment primarily to Guyana’s Oil and Gas and Services sectors and establish and develop crucial partnerships.
