Georgetown : Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee met with chairpersons of the different boards within the Guyana Prison Service (GPS), where he announced that Cabinet has approved the renaming of this institution to the Guyana Prison and Correctional Services.
The Minister described the name change as timely, since it is coming at a time when not only is the GPS embarking on a reform process, but the entire security sector as well.
He commended the various chairpersons of the Sentence Management, Agriculture, Recruit, and Training boards for their contribution towards prison reforms over the years.
“The whole idea is not only to have a change of name, but to add substance, and it is these boards that bring the substance to the name change,” the Home Affairs Minister stated.
Under the security sector reform strategy, there are a number of priority areas that will be focused on for the GPS, whose implementation is expected to cost approximately $831M.
These include: modernisation of existing infrastructure and penal legislation, enhancement of human resource management and financial administration, strengthening of inter-agency collaboration and the promotion of successful offender reintegration into society.
