Georgetown : The Guyana Forestry Commission (GFC) in collaboration with the Agriculture Ministry engaged key stakeholders in a seminar as part of the Commission’s activities in commemoration of International Year of Forests, as declared by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly.
Delivering the feature address, President Bharrat Jagdeo said that at the end of this year, there should be a reawakened consciousness of the role of forests and, a commitment to protect them.
He explained that some countries in the industrialised world stand firm with regards to forests preservation but, their climate change policies would ultimately lead to the destruction of the world.
“Some countries would appropriate money to support forest initiatives and are unwilling to commit to a global agreement that seeks to cut carbon emission, and if the concentration of green house gases continues to grow, the temperature increase would be unsustainable… you cannot say that you want to preserve forests and then pursue policies that may lead to their eventual, total destruction,” the President lamented.
The Head of State posited that in Guyana there is a greater consciousness of the issue of climate change and the vital role of forests than in many other developed countries in the world.
