Guyana sits in the center of countries highly listed in the 50 most violent cities in the world with a rate of 111.33 homicides per 100 thousand inhabitants, in 2017.
The Mexican Los Cabos was the most violent city in the world and entered the ranking for the first time.
Five of the 10 most violent cities, among the 50 that include the ranking, are Mexican: in addition to those already mentioned are La Paz, Tijuana and Victoria. In the Brazilian Fortaleza the homicide rate went from 44.98 in 2016 to 83.48 in 2017, an increase of 85.59% in just one year. But the shot of the homicidal violence in Fortaleza pales in comparison to the one in Los Cabos: it went from 61 homicides in 2016 to 365 in 2017, almost 500% more in a year. The growing difficulty to recognize the magnitude of the homicidal violence in Venezuela, in addition to the demographic phenomenon that that country is suffering From previous years, but especially in 2017, there is a new phenomenon that expresses the very serious crisis that in all the orders that Venezuela faces: the growing inability to count its dead. Before official data, the press information on the subject in 2017 was much scarcer than in previous years, less periodic and less specific as regards the incidence in the cities. That is why two Venezuelan cities came out of the ranking, without us being certain that they should not appear. On the other hand, Venezuela is facing an accelerated process of depopulation. Four million of its inhabitants have left the country, more than half of them in the last three years. As a result, official population estimates are not real, nor are homicide rates based on them, but higher. Other novelties presented by the 2017 ranking are:
Included in the 2016 ranking, six cities came out of the 2017: Cuiabá (Brazil), Curitiba (Brazil), São Luís (Brazil), Armenia (Colombia), Cumaná (Venezuela) and Gran Barcelona (Venezuela). Of these, the last two came out because there are no data to calculate the rates, not because there is certainty that the homicide rates have dropped enough to no longer appear in the ranking. The four remaining cities had rates lower than that of Cúcuta, Colombia (34.78 homicides per 100 thousand inhabitants), which ranked 50th. The cities of Los Cabos (Mexico) entered the ranking for the first time; La Paz (Mexico), for the first time; Tepic (Mexico), which re-enters; San Juan (Puerto Rico), which re-enters; Porto Alegre (Brazil), a re-entry and Campina Grande (Brazil), which is also a re-entry. Of the 50 cities in the ranking 17 are located in Brazil, 12 in Mexico, 5 in Venezuela, 4 in the United States, 3 in Colombia, 3 in South Africa, and 2 in Honduras. There is a city in El Salvador, Guatemala, Puerto Rico and Jamaica. The overwhelming majority of the 50 most violent cities in the world are located in Latin America (42 cities). In the 50 cities the average rate was 59.17 (41,430 intentional homicides among 70,016,008 inhabitants). But only the first 16 cities exceeded that average. Lic.
