Georgetown : Minister of Legal Affairs and Attorney General Anil Nandlall has denied the statement carried in Thursday’s Stabroek News paper that the Guyana National Team would not be participating in the Regional Twenty 20 Cricket Tournament.
In an invited comment to the Government Information Agency, Minister Nandlall said, “what you see reflected in the paper, is a member of the defunct Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) writing to the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) to say that Guyana will not be fielding a team. Now that is not true, because the IMC (Interim Management Committee) has communicated to the WICB that Guyana will field a team, and the same players who have been selected by the very defunct GCB are the same players whose names have been forwarded to the WICB as the Guyana team.”
The Minster stated that the position now of the defunct GCB is that Guyana will not be participating, and that is deliberately wrong.
While the names of the players have been sent to the WICB, Minister Nandlall pointed out that more importantly; those players have independent contracts with the WICB to play in the competition.
Meanwhile Chairman of the Interim Management Committee (IMC) Clive Lloyd said that he was very disappointed that the team which was chosen by the GCB and accepted by the WICB now cannot have the opportunity to represent the country at a very important tournament.
Secretary of the GCB Anand Sanasie, on Wednesday last, informed the WICB that two-time Champions Guyana are unlikely to field a side in the upcoming Caribbean Twenty20 tournament, as the Guyana Government made a decision to take over the running of the game in the country by implementing an IMC chaired by Clive Lloyd, a veteran of the sport.
