Georgetown : Guyana will be co-hosting the 37th regular meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) fromJuly 4 to 6, 2016.
Addressing the post -Cabinet media briefing at the Ministry of the Presidency , Minister of Natural Resources, Raphael Trotman explained that this decision was taken at the 27th Inter-session meeting of CARICOM Heads of Government which was recently held in Belize from February 16 to 18.
He explained that Guyana was asked to undertake this responsibility because the intended host country Dominica is unable to do so. The country is still recovering from severe damage to its infrastructure and economy by tropical storm Erica, last year.
Additionally, the Minister noted that according to the Communities’ chairmanship rotation schedule, Guyana will assume chairmanship of CARICOM from January 1 to June 30, 2017. This will mean that President David Granger will become the Chairman of CARICOM for the year, he observed.
