Guyana’s 7thannual Medical Scientific Conference held yesterday

Georgetown : Doctors along with other medical practitioners attended Guyana’s 7th annual Medical Scientific Conference which was held at the Guyana International Conference Centre (GICC), Liliendaal, yesterday.

           

The conference was held under the theme “Identifying challenges, defining solutions through research and collaboration” saw presentations on the area of management of acute gastro enteritis (AGE) in pediatric patients, a review of electrophoresis testing at Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation’s medical laboratory from June 2013 to June 2014, infection in the Burns Care Unit, neonatal jaundice, epidemiological profile of prostate cancer and sudden cardiac deaths among others.

  During  brief remarks at the conference, Minister of Health, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran lauded the efforts of GPHC’s staff for their hard work and also for hosting of the conference.

The Minister pointed out that he would like Guyana to become an international health conference destination and suggested that the conference be moved closer to Caribbean Wellness Day which he said would bring more awareness to it and attract more internal health practitioners.

 He added that the objective of this activity is to advance the ethics of the local health sector which is welcomed by the Ministry as he pledged his support towards the initiative.

The Minister further highlighted the fact the Ministry has been conducting numerous training activities for health care providers and physicians. He also noted that significant investments have been made in the area of infrastructural development and assured the gathering that this will continue. 

The conference is usually accompanied by a cocktail and banquet for the medical community which serves as a graduation reception for doctors and nurses who have completed the post-graduate  and other training programmes held during the year.

This year’s graduation ceremony was held at Parc Rayne, Rahaman’s  Place, Houston saw a total of 24 persons, in two categories – doctors and nurses, graduating in various programmes.

 Two doctors graduated with their Masters in Emergency Medicine, two with Post Graduate diplomas in surgery and one in Orthopedic Surgery.

Meanwhile, 16 nurses graduated after completing training in Neonatal Intensive Care (NIC) and two in care for Amnesia patients. The ceremony also saw one Eco Cardiography technician graduating.

Also in attendance were Director of the Institute of Health Science Education, Dr. Madan Rambarran and Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr. Shamdeo Persaud.
