Georgetown : Attendees at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Conference, scheduled for November 27 to 29, 2015, in Malta, will be apprised of the new developments in the Guyana-Venezuela border matter.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Second Vice President Carl Greenidge made the announcement at a recent press conference held at his Takuba Lodge office.
He added that the Guyana-Venezuela border issue is now normally on the agenda of the Heads of Government Conference, since the regional leaders have recognised, that Venezuela has, for years, been pursuing its unjust claim.
“They have asked (to be informed) and have usually each year, been apprised of the developments in this area…having heard the developments, they will (then) issue a declaration as a prelude to the meeting in November,” Minister Greenidge explained.
Commonwealth Ministers of Foreign Affairs met in September last, and drafted a declaration which confirms their previous position, that the territory currently occupied, and over which Guyana has sovereignty, is Guyana’s territory. Therefore, the actions of Venezuela, in (seeking to) exercise any authority over the said territory, is regretted.
“There was a statement by the Commonwealth Foreign Affairs Ministers which will be looked at, and an update will be provided to the Heads,” Minister Greenidge explained.
The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting for 2015 will be observed under the theme, “Adding Global Value”. This theme is about encouraging Commonwealth governments and civil society to think about what unite them and what they can achieve together.
Malta has requested fellow Commonwealth Members to consider which important issues have been missed by other global institutions, and to use the Commonwealth to provide leadership in those areas.
