Guyanese can expect GECOM’s declaration by June 17

Georgetown: June 13, 2020 has been decided by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) as the new deadline for the completion of the national recount of votes while an additional three days will be given for the preparation of the report to be submitted to the Chair for a declaration of the results, multiple GECOM officials confirmed.

“The details will be in an addendum that will be gazetted and published soon,” one source said.

Initially, the elections commission headed by Justice (Ret’d) Claudette Singh had set a 25-day timeline (Mat 30) for completion of the recount; however, with 956 ballot boxes left to be processed, an extension of timeline was necessary.

Many of those parties had posed several recommendations, including the addition of new workstations to speed up the process.

The Commission did, after a review by the Health Emergency Operations Centre (HEOC) team of the National COVID-19 Task Force, add two new workstations and those were allocated to Regions 6 and 7.

The exercise which commenced on May 6th is being conducted at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC). Counting is being done every day for an 11-hour period starting from 8 am and concluding at 7 pm.
