Georgetown: Guyana has won five of the eight awards at this year’s Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) regional awards. The winners from Guyana are as follows: Zimeena A Rasheed – Anna Regina Secondary School, Most Outstanding in Technical Vocational, Yogeeta Persaud – Anna Regina Secondary School, Overall Outstanding Achievement; Rafena Mustapha – Saraswati Vidya Niketan, Most Outstanding in Humanities; Cecil Cox – Queen’s College, Most Outstanding in Sciences and Sasha S Woodroffe – Queen’s College, Most Outstanding in Business Studies.
Education Minister Priya Manickchand said “I am extremely pleased to congratulate these students on their momentous achievements. I know they have had long nights and very early mornings as they prepared themselves for excellence. To the teachers and parents who would have worked incredibly hard to ensure that these children perform at the highest level, I thank you.,”
She further stated that: “This is indeed a very proud moment for Guyana and our education system. That the government remains committed to the development of the education sector and continues to invest significantly in the enhancement of the quality of education provided to our students means that as a country we will be producing more students of high quality who will be well equipped with the essential skills that will forge a development strategy from which all Guyanese will benefit. “We are proud to say that our students have been dominating three categories over the years: the Best Overall Science Award; Best Business Studies Award; and, Most Outstanding Performance in the Region Award. In 2012 Guyana won four (4) of the eight (8) Regional Awards.”
In recognition of their achievements, CXC will present these students with awards at a ceremony to be held at the National Cultural Centre on Thursday 5 December, 2013. CXC will be responsible for hotel accommodation at the Pegasus Hotel, meals and ground transportation throughout their stay. A chaperone will be resident in the hotel for the period and will accompany the students on courtesy calls and visits to places of interest.
