GuySuCo, D&I, increased production high on Agriculture Ministry agenda

Georgetown : Newly sworn-in Cabinet ministers assigned to the agriculture ministry already have a clear vision of where the sector needs to be and has reinforced their commitment to ensuring that the necessary work is done in this regard.
Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy assured that even though his name has always been associated with the health ministry in the past, he is no stranger to the field of agriculture and the issues facing farming communities.

He said that while Guyana has done remarkably well in terms of boosting the security thereby achieving the status of self-sufficiency in terms of food security, more focus needs to be placed on incorporating more modern methodology and introducing new crops to increase production, areas which will be given much attention under his leadership.
The new Minister added that the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GUYSUCO) continues to be a very significant part of not only the sector’s development but, the country as a whole given its contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
“No one can deny the fact that GUYSUCO had challenging years, we will be looking to ensure that the corporation becomes an example of a model enterprise not only for Guyana and the Caribbean but other countries in the ACP,” Minister Ramsammy said.
Meanwhile, Minister in the Ministry and former Regional Chairman, Region Two, Ali Baksh is also well-known in the sector; as he has over the years, sat on many boards and committees, making representation on behalf of the farming community. He expressed great enthusiasm at the prospects of working along with Minister Ramsammy and the regional authorities to enhance and expand agriculture in Guyana particularly in the area of drainage and irrigation.  “Since we are opening up new lands for both traditional and non-traditional crops, the focus will be more and more on drainage and irrigation and better access roads for farmers,” he said.
