GUYSUCO’s harvesters return to work- recent strike action affected company’s production

LBI, East Coast Demerara – Following up on a recent strike by harvesters of  the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GUYSUCO), the organisation this afternoon says harvesters who were on strike for the past four days have returned today to work on their own accord.

This is after they would have confirmed that they were mislead/misinformed about the Corporation’s role in providing assistance to their injured colleague.

The Guyana Sugar Corporation Inc. last night said the latest effort by external elements to exploit and incite industrial unrest within the sugar industry.
The latest issue pertains to a harvester attached to the Blairmont sugar estate in Region 5 who fell ill last Saturday and was diagnosed with trauma to the lower back and for which he is expected to make a full recovery.
However, GuySuCo has received reports that a campaign of misinformation was fed to the colleagues of the worker – that the Corporation was less than helpful in ensuring he received adequate medical treatment. The workers are also being encouraged to continue their strike action against the Corporation.
The strike action by the workers over a period of days has affected production at the estate.
