Georgetown – There have been a growing number of cases of dengue since 2007 to present in Guyana. This sparked the Ministry of Health and the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) to prepare a draft integrated management strategy for dengue prevention and control for Guyana.
Dengue is a mosquito borne infection that in recent decades has become a major international public health concern.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates there may be 50 million dengue infections worldwide every year.
According to Minister of Health Dr. Leslie Ramsammy between 2007 to present there have been a consistent increase in the number of cases of dengue and the incidence rate in Guyana.
Dr. Ramsammy emphasized that every citizen should be educated on the vector borne disease and how they can help in the prevention phase.
Fogging and the use of appropriate chemicals to control mosquito population is still an effective tool.
