High court stops extradition of businessmen wanted in US on fraud charges

Port-of-Spain: Businessmen Ishwar Galbaransingh and Fteve ferguson will stay put in this country, after a High Court Judge quashed the State's application to extradite the pair in connection with fraud charges over the construction of the Piarco International Airport.

Justice Ronnie Boodoosingh today ruled that it would be unjust, oppressive and unlawful to order the extradition of the former UNC financiers to the United States to face charges.

Justice Boodoosigh added that in relation to the alleged offences, Trinidad and Tobago would be the appropriate jurisdiction fot the matter to be heard.

The judge also ruled that the defendents in the matter the State would have to pay costs to Galbaransingh and Ferguson.
