Around 5 am today many residents and business owners in Berbice woke up to severe flooding due to the overtopping of the Berbice River which led to a breech in the county's sea defence.
Regional Chairman, David Armogan confirmed that the sea walll just behind properties owned by fomer New Amsterdam Mayor Mr.Errol Alphonso collapsed from the pressure of the high tide causing houses closer to the river banks to come under several feet of water.
Thousands of residents are affected by the flood.Especially occupants of lower flats ,most of whom have begun evacuating their premises. Many persons are staying on the roadway while others are going to friends and relatives who have not been affected.
Meanwhile,the New Amsterdam Market was also under several feet of water. As well as,Guyana Stores Ltd and several other businesses along Strand. A storage facility used by the Ministry of Education was also affected,according to the facility's guard a number of textbooks have been damaged as well as boxes of biscuits and juice which are distributed to primary schools for the Ministry's Feeding Program.
Mr.Armogan plans to ask central government for assistance to fumigate homes and prevent water borne diseases,while the Town Council will seek assistance from the Fire Service in order to wash the market. The water began to recede in a few areas around 7am. But places such as Blairmont and Stanleytown remain flooded.
