Georgetown : Minister of Agriculture Dr. Leslie Ramsammy stated that while Guyana is currently experiencing the effects of the May/June rains, the Hydromet Service predicts that May, June and July are expected to be very wet and the overall rainfall averages are expected to be the long- term normal for this period.
According to the Government Information Agency’s release, 20 rain days are also expected in June with just over 306 mm of rain. In July the wettest month of the season, 337 mm of rain and 22 rain days are expected.
The Minister has also advised that the rainy period during this season will coincide with very high tides. He noted that over the last few days Guyana has been experiencing some very high levels of rainfall in Regions 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9 and 10, and this has led to some flooding in Region 9 and some flash flooding in Regions 5, 6, 9 and10.
In an update on the current situation around the country, the Minister stated that 27 areas are affected in Region 5, and the upper reaches of Mahaicony and Abary Creeks which have experienced some flooding.
Meanwhile, the East Demerara Water Conservancy (EDWC) and Boerasirie conservancies remain at manageable levels while water discharge is currently being done from the EDWC at the western end using the Kofi and five- door sluice.
Monitoring will continue in all ten regions while teams from the Ministry of Agriculture are currently in Regions 6, 10 and 9.
