Georgetown: The Ministry of Home Affairs is boosting its measures to combat issue of drug trafficking in Guyana, while garnering help from the international community. In light of the fight against the trade of illicit drugs, Guyana has taken a proactive approach to collaborate with the international community to stamp out this problem.
In this regard the Home Affairs Ministry has reiterated that Guyana remains committed to regional and international collaboration in areas such as information sharing, and best practices in law enforcement.
In a release issued the ministry added that Guyana has since signed on to several initiatives among which are security agreements with neighbouring Brazil and Suriname.
Guyana in conjunction with neighbouring states have always acted resolutely in dealing with criminals who sell drugs, those who facilitate transshipment, money laundering, and the illicit cultivation of drugs the release added
According to the release, Guyana has also developed an on-going relation with the inter-american drug abuse control commission and the Multilateral Evaluation Mechanism (MEM).
Additionally, Guyana has continued to promote its counter drug bilateral agreements with Suriname, Venezuela, Brazil, Cuba, and Colombia among other states. Drug trafficking has particularly severe implications because of the vast illegal profits it generates: totaling an estimated $322B a year.
