Home Affairs Ministry slammed in wake of piracy attacks.

Georgetown: The People’s National Congress Reform has expressed its distress over Minister of Home Affairs, Mr. Clement Rohee’s admission, only yesterday, Thursday, that Guyana needs “international cooperation” to suppress piracy. This, after nearly 5 years in office, is an admission of failure. Rohee’s confession that he needs to review the measures put in place “to ensure their efficacy or efficiency,” suggests that he has not been paying attention to this serious crime all along said the party.

Artisanal fishermen for years have complained bitterly and frequently to the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Home Affairs about violent attacks by pirates. They have also begged the Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Defence Force to provide better protection and, particularly, to help them to recover their engines, nets and other personal property, stolen by pirates. Crews of artisanal fishermen in small wooden boats powered by outboard engines, often within sight of land and with the most rudimentary equipment, have been pounced on by gangs of pirates with fast boats and assault rifles over and over

The PNCR is calling on the Ministry of Home Affairs to start taking action by providing the Police and Defence Forces with the personnel, vessels and resources to ensure that vulnerable Guyanese citizens are protected at all costs.
