Georgetown: Health Minister Bheri Ramsarran says another 400 doctors will be added to the health system. These medical students are in their final stage of preparation in Cuba and will be coming home within a short period of time.
“It is expected that they will serve. The first contract, in the first instance, obliges them to serve five years, after they come back, graduated as what we term graduate doctors…fewer than 200 of those graduate doctors have returned to Guyana and are in various stages of preparation for dispersal in the health care system…With an influx of hundreds of Cuban-trained Guyanese doctors, we have a big pool now to create more post graduate doctors, that is, specialists.”
Ramsarran said that over the past five years, the Ministry has trained a significantly large number of nurses. But for last year, in particular, training has been extended to see an increase in midwives, X-tray technicians, medical laboratory technicians among other skills.
He said at least six areas of study are being offered with some being, general surgery; orthopedic surgery; gynecology; pediatrics and emergency medicine.
